Stork’s Nest is a program designed to increase the number of
women who get early and regular prenatal care so that more
babies get a healthy start in life. Stork’s Nest provides
incentives to help pregnant women make and keep prenatal care
appointments. It also teaches expectant parents about healthy
prenatal and infant care practices.

The first Stork’s Nest was established in
Atlanta in 1971 . Today, there are more than 100 Nests across the country.
A cooperative national project of
Zeta Phi Beta Sorority,
Inc. and the
March of Dimes. Stork’s Nest fulfills the sorority’s pledge to contribute to the health and wellness of children, and is intimately tied to the March of Dimes mission to prevent birth defects and infant mortality. |
Why does Stork’s Nest Exist?
To have a safe pregnancy and a healthy baby, a
mother-to-be must make some important
decisions. Seeking prenatal care as soon as possible is the most crucial. Tragically, many women do not get prenatal care during
pregnancy, and their babies may be born too early or die. Twenty-five percent of US women fail to get prenatal care in the first three months of
pregnancy, the most important time in an unborn baby's development. Babies born to women who don't receive prenatal care are four times more likely to die before their first birthday. Each year, 33,000 babies die in the United
States before they are a year old.
Prenatal Care
Prenatal care is the health care you receive before your baby is born. Women who start prenatal care early in
their pregnancies tend to have fewer problems and healthier babies than do women who delay or have no prenatal
care. It is important to see a doctor or visit a clinic as soon as you suspect you
might be pregnant, because your baby’s body develops rapidly, and all the major organs are formed during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.
Pregnancy Resources
Think Healthy for a Healthy Baby!

years.
